About InternetSpeedTest.com

InternetSpeedTest.com is a free tool for measuring your internet connection, with plain-English guides that explain what the numbers mean and what to do about them.

What we do

We provide a browser-based speed test that measures download speed, upload speed, ping, jitter, ping under load and, where the network allows, packet loss. Around the test, we publish guides on what different speeds can handle, why connections slow down and how to fix common problems.

Why this site exists

Most people run a speed test because something feels wrong: a video buffering, a call breaking up, a game lagging. A single number in Mbps rarely explains that. We built this site to give a result you can act on: the measurements, a plain explanation of what they mean for everyday activities, and clear next steps.

What we stand for

  • Real measurements only. Every number in a result comes from the test. If something can’t be measured, we say so instead of estimating.
  • Transparent method. Our methodology explains what each figure means and where the test falls short.
  • No invented data. We don’t publish rankings, averages or statistics we can’t back with real data and a stated method.
  • Useful before anything else. The test comes first. Pages are designed so the tool and the information are never crowded out.
  • Respect for privacy. We collect as little as possible and explain what the test sends in our privacy policy.

How the test works

The measurements run in your browser using Cloudflare’s open-source speed test engine and Cloudflare’s global network. We are not Cloudflare and are not affiliated with or endorsed by Cloudflare; we use their publicly available engine and test endpoints.

Who the site is for

We write primarily for home internet users in the United States, and also for readers in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and other English-speaking countries. Where rules or terms differ between countries, we try to say so.

Independence

We are not an internet provider and are not paid by providers to rank or recommend them. If we ever show advertising, it will be clearly separated from the test and from our guidance, and it will never be placed over the test controls.
