What affects 4G LTE speed
Signal quality, not just bars
The bar icon is a rough guide. Two places with the same bars can perform very differently because of interference and signal quality. If your phone has a field-test or network-info screen, signal quality readings tell you more, but for most people the practical test is simple: run a speed test, move, and run it again.
Cell congestion
Everyone connected to a cell shares its capacity. LTE speeds often drop at commuting times, in the evening in residential areas, and at events. If your morning and evening results differ a lot in the same spot, congestion is the likely reason.
Carrier aggregation and bands
LTE phones can combine several frequency bands for more speed. Which bands you get depends on your carrier, your phone model and the local tower. A newer phone on the same plan can be faster for this reason.
Your plan’s rules
Some plans slow data after a monthly threshold, reduce priority during busy periods, or cap video quality. A speed test measures what you get, so it reflects these limits if they apply to the test traffic.
What you can do on 4G
| If your LTE test shows | You can usually |
|---|---|
| Under 3 Mbps | Browse, message and stream audio. Video at low resolution. |
| 3–10 Mbps | Stream HD video on a phone (Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p) and make video calls. |
| 10–50 Mbps | Comfortable for almost anything on one device, including hotspotting a laptop. |
| Over 50 Mbps | Faster than many people need on a phone; large app downloads go quickly. |
Ping on LTE is often 30–70 ms or more, and jitter is higher than on a cable. Casual online games are usually fine. Competitive gaming over LTE can feel inconsistent.
Getting better 4G speed
- Move closer to a window or outside. Buildings with metal frames and coated glass block signal.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off to make the phone search for the best cell again.
- Check for a carrier settings or system update.
- Use WiFi calling indoors if your carrier supports it and your home WiFi is good.
- If your phone supports 5G, compare with a 5G test in the same spot.
